How to replace a forklift cylinder

Follow the below step-by-step guide to safety and efficiently swap out your forklift’s propane cylinder:

• It is best practice to wear protective gear such as goggles and gloves.
• Before you begin the refueling process, make sure your forklift is on a flat surface and that it is turned off to avoid creating a spark during the cylinder switch out. You also want to ensure that the parking brake is fully engaged.
• Locate your current propane cylinder and turn its valve clockwise to make sure it’s tightly closed.
• Loosen the fitting to disconnect the hose and regulator.
• Take the empty cylinder out from its mounting bracket and safely move it to your cylinder storage area.
• Check your replacement cylinder to make sure there is no visible damage such as dents and rust and that there are no fuel leaks.
• Clean off any debris from the valve and fittings.
• Propane cylinders need recertification every 12 years. Find the date stamp on the cylinder and make sure it falls within this time frame.
• Secure the new cylinder in the mounting bracket and double check that the collar is in the correct position.
• Connect your forklift’s propane hose and regulator to the cylinder valve and tighten everything firmly in place (you can use your hand to do this).
• Turn the valve counterclockwise slowly – this will release fuel from the tank. As the connection pressurizes, you should hear a low hissing sound.
• To test for leaks, spray a mixture of soap and water around the valve. Bubbles inside the valve indicate a potential leak.
• Finally, turn your forklift on and make sure it is running normally.
