As a safety precaution, propane tanks should actually only be 80% full at a time. The remaining 20% should be left empty so that the fuel can safely expand, which is what happens as temperatures increase since propane is a liquid.

Therefore, a 120-gallon propane tank safely holds about 96 gallons of propane at a time, a 500-gallon propane tank holds 400 gallons of fuel, and so on.

How to estimate how much propane you’re going to use

How to monitor your propane tank levels

If you don’t have a propane tank monitor it is important to monitor your own fuel levels. Here are a few ways you can do this:

• Pour warm water down the side of your propane tank. Run your hand down the side of your tank to feel for a cool spot. This cool spot indicates how full your tank is.
• Put your tank on a scale to weigh it. Then subtract its tare weight from the number that you saw on the scale. That new number tells you how full your tank is.
• Add a gauge to your tank if it didn’t come with one.
