So you have a propane appliance at your North Central Texas home or business. Great! You are hopefully reaping all the benefits that the fuel has to offer such as efficiency, cost effectiveness, reliability, safety and eco-friendliness.
Having and using a propane appliance does mean that, at one point or another, you will have to plan out your next fuel delivery (that is unless you enroll in Yellow Rose’s wireless propane tank monitoring service).
Since you can’t plan out your next fuel delivery without having a good idea of how much propane you are going to use and, therefore, need to order let’s get into how exactly you can do this.
The answer to this question is going to be different for everybody. After all, if you are heating your whole house with a propane-powered heating system your propane usage is going to be significantly different than if you were just using propane to power a generator that you only use in the occasional emergency situation.
In addition to exactly what you are using propane to power, you also need to factor in the number of appliances you are powering with propane, what kind of condition those appliances are in and, if you are using propane to heat your home, how large that home is and how long the winters last where you live to determine your fuel usage.
Of course, we cannot give you an exact number when it comes to estimating your propane usage, but below are some general estimates:
o If you are using propane to heat the water in your home you will need somewhere between about 300 to 400 gallons of propane a year
o Homes that are about 2,220 square feet that are relying on propane for home heating should estimate using between about 800 and 1,200 gallons of fuel annually
o If you are just using propane to cook you should only need about 50 gallons of propane a year
o If you are cooking with propane and drying your clothes with a propane-powered clothes dryer you can estimate needing about 50 to 100 gallons of propane annually
When planning your next propane delivery it is also important to keep in mind what having a full tank of propane actually means.
A propane tank is considered full at the 80% mark. Filling it past this point is actually considered dangerous and a safety hazard. Since propane is in a liquid form when it is in a tank, it needs a little bit of room to expand, which happens as it gets warmer. Only filling your tank to 80% leaves the room that propane needs.
Therefore, just because you have a propane tank that is 120 gallons does not mean that you have 120 gallons of propane inside that tank. In fact, a 120-gallon propane tank should only have about 96 gallons of propane in it at a time.
