How To Swap Out Your Grill Propane Cylinder
Follow these steps once your propane cylinder is empty
For many of us here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the arrival of spring and summer means that the grilling season can officially start! And while that of course means enjoying more time outside, it also comes along with a whole list of things to do. Your outdoor living space and the area where you grill may need a good cleaning. Perhaps it’s time to upgrade your grilling tools. And maybe your grill needs a new propane cylinder.
How to change out your grill tank
It may go without saying, but if you don’t have enough gas in your grill tank, you are not going to be able to get much grilling done. So if you find yourself in a position where you need to swap out your old propane cylinder for a new one, just follow the below steps. Your grill will be up and running in no time!
- First, suit up with a pair of goggles and a pair of gloves to protect yourself from any leftover gas that is still sitting in your cylinder.
- Check the tank and around the tank for any leaks (this will smell like rotten eggs) or damage.
- Make sure that your grill is turned off and that the valve on your tank is closed.
- Turn your grill’s pressure regulator to the left and remove it.
- If applicable (not all grills have one) loosen your grill’s restraining bolt.
- Take your propane cylinder out from its storage compartment.
- Once your old propane cylinder has been removed from the storage compartment, replace it with a new, full cylinder.
- Tighten the restraining bolt around the new cylinder.
- Put the cylinder’s pressure regulator on the valve and tighten it.
- Before you officially start using your grill, perform a leak test. Spray the cylinder’s valve and your grill regulator with soapy water. Look inside the valve – if you see any bubbles you might have a loose connection or a leak. Re-tighten all the connections, spray again and re-open the valve. If bubbles are still showing up in the valve, replace the tank again or replace your grill’s hose.
Additional tips for your grill propane cylinder
Here are some other important things to know when it comes to your grill and its tank:
- Always keep your grill on a level surface and at least five feet from your home, outdoor furniture, trees and other potentially flammable objects.
- Never leave a grill that is on unattended.
- Always store your grill tanks outdoors in well-ventilated areas and on level surfaces. They should also always be kept upright.
- Keep your grill tanks out of direct sunlight and away from your home and other potential sources of ignition.
- Keep young kids and pets a safe distance away from your grill when you’re using it and do not store grill tanks within their reach.
