A closer look at wireless propane tank monitoring

Customers who enroll in Yellow Rose Propane’s wireless propane tank monitoring option receive an Otodata device, which gets installed on your tank by a member of our team.

This monitor uses advanced wireless and cellular technology to provide us with information on your tank’s fuel levels in real time. When your fuel levels reach a certain point, an alert is sent to us (and you as well). We then schedule your next propane delivery accordingly.

Wireless propane tank monitoring helps ensure that you always have a sufficient amount of propane in your tank so that you can continue to use your propane-powered heating, pool heater or clothes dryer. It is also great for people who own second homes and can’t always be available to check the propane levels at their various properties.

Monitoring your own propane tank levels

If you don’t have a propane tank monitor you will need to track and check your own fuel levels. There are a few different ways to do this:

  1. With a scale: Get your tank’s water capacity (WC) and tare weight (TW) from your tank’s handle. Place your tank on a scale and subtract the TW from the number you see on the scale.
  2. Use a gauge: If your tank doesn’t automatically come with a gauge you can add one. You can choose between an analog scale or a digital scale.
  3. Use warm water: You can pour water down the side of your propane tank. Run your hand down the side of your tank to feel for a cool spot. This cool spot indicates how full your tank currently is.

What to keep in mind if you are monitoring your own propane levels

Homeowners who are tracking and monitoring their own propane levels need to keep a couple of important things in mind.

The first is that your tank is considered full at the 80% point. This is for safety purposes. Therefore, a 120-gallon tank doesn’t actually hold 120 gallons of propane. It actually holds about 96.

This brings us to the next point. Will-call customers should contact their propane provider when their tank is about 30% full. This should give you enough time to arrange a delivery without having to worry about running out of fuel.
